TO
Dutchess County Legislature
". . . .The Fairview Fire District is already operating with minimal manpower and
operating at multiple incidents for approximately 16% of our calls and
we cannot handle the burden of additional incidents that Student housing
present us as we are already struggling to meet current service demands.. . . . ."

Dear MARIST Parents, Alumni and Students:                                                                                                       Fall 2008

STOP Donations to Marist College ! * !

  *      MARIST College is UNFAIR to our local community especially the people within the Fairview Fire District where Marist is located !

  1.       MARIST's refusal to pay its fair share for the emergency services it benefits from

*         has Swallowed our businesses and residential homes while devaluing those remaining while MARIST continually expands its campus !

  *       This expansion has annihilated our tax base.

*         The continual addition of new dorms & facilities requires more ambulance & fire calls to respond to these young adults'safety while

*         Emergency Staff requirements and costs continue to escalate

2.        MARIST's fiscal irresponsibility

*         is costing our senior citizens their homes and their life savings, and

*         has thrust the expense of financing the district on slightly less than 2,200 homeowners while Marist's student enrollment has increased to over 5,000.

3.          MARIST's neglect of the issues threatens student safety!*!

4.          MARIST President Dennis J. Murray, and

Board of Trustees Chariman & CEO Robert R. Dyson

PAY ATTENTION

JAYWALKING IS ILLEGAL

DO OBEY THE CROSSING SIGNALS

Activate the crossing signal by pushing the button and WAIT for the "WALK SIGN"

•  Look to the left, right and left again.

•  Watch for turning cars.

•  When it is safe, leave the curb and cross the street.

DON'T talk on a cell phone while crossing Route 9.

DON'T stop to talk to others while crossing Route 9.

DON'T activate the Route 9 crossing signal if NOT crossing.

MARIST SAFETY & SECURITY

http://www.marist.edu/security/route9.html

The State Traffic Law regarding PEDESTRIANS who cross at crosswalks regulated by Traffic Lights requires pedestrians to obey the traffic signals when using crosswalks at intersections controlled by traffic lights. It is a violation of the State Traffic Law for a person to cross when a "don't walk" signal is displayed and the person can receive a traffic summons (ticket) from the police. This violation is commonly known as "jaywalking."

It is also unlawful for PEDESTRIANS to walk on the roadway when sidewalks are provided.

  • Receiving a ticket for "jaywalking" requires the violator to attend a court hearing and if found guilty can result in a fine, possibly as high as $100.00 or other sanctions.
  • Students who receive two or more summonses from the Town Police and/ or citations from Marist Security in a semester may be placed on disciplinary probation.

ENFORCEMENT BY TOWN POLICE AND MARIST SECURITY

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department enforces the laws in regard to both MOTORISTS (speeding, no turn on red, etc) and PEDESTRIANS (crossing when the don't walk indicator is displayed or not crossing at intersections). Marist Security staff will also monitor pedestrian activity at the crosswalks. When stopped on campus by Marist Security, students are required to identify themselves and/or present valid ID.
